Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 96: Lakṣmaṇa Notices Bharata’s Army
Text 2.96.24

यन्निमित्तं भवान्राज्याच्च्युतो राघव शाश्वतात्।
संप्राप्तोऽयमरिर्वीर भरतो वध्य एव मे॥

yan-nimittaṁ bhavān rājyāc cyuto rāghava śāśvatāt
samprāpto ’yam arir vīra bharato vadhya eva me

yat-nimittam = for whose sake; bhavān = You have been; rājyāt cyutaḥ = thrown off a kingdom; rāghava = Rāghava; śāśvatāt = stable; samprāptaḥ ayam = has arrived here; ariḥ = [My] enemy; vīra = O hero; bharataḥ = Bharata; vadhyaḥ eva me = and He will be killed by Me.

O hero Rāghava, [My] enemy Bharata, for whose sake You have been thrown off a stable kingdom, has arrived here and He will be killed by Me.1

1 Rājyāc cyuto rāghava śāśvatāt indicates that Rāma was to acquire a stable kingdom, not an unsteady kingdom, that is, He wasn’t about to inherit a kingdom in the midst of public unrest, etc.
