Chapter 97: Rāma Instructs Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.97.25
स एष सुमहाकायः कम्पते वाहिनीमुखे।
नागः शत्रुंजयो नाम वृद्धस्तातस्य धीमतः॥
sa eṣa sumahā-kāyaḥ kampate vāhinī-mukhe
nāgaḥ śatruñjayo nāma vṛddhas tātasya dhīmataḥ
saḥ eṣaḥ sumahā-kāyaḥ = the large sized; kampate = is moving about; vāhinī-mukhe = in front of the army here; nāgaḥ = elephant; śatruñjayaḥ = Śatruñjaya; nāma = named; vṛddhaḥ = and tall; tātasya = of My father; dhīmataḥ = knowledgeable.
“The large-sized and tall elephant of My knowledgeable father named Śatruñjaya is moving about in front of the army here.
It is the nature of an excited elephant to move about [here and there]. [Daśaratha was] knowledgeable about taking care of an elephant. This is not the Śatruñjaya which Rāma had obtained from His maternal uncle and which He had given to Suyajña.
