Chapter 99: Bharata Meets Rāma
Text 2.99.4
गच्छन्नेवाथ भरतस्तापसालयसंस्थिताम्।
भ्रातुः पर्णकुटीं श्रीमानुटजं च ददर्श ह॥
gacchann evātha bharatas tāpasālaya-saṁsthitām
bhrātuḥ parṇa-kuṭīṁ śrīmān uṭajaṁ ca dadarśa ha
gacchan eva = while walking; atha = then; bharataḥ = Bharata; tāpasa-ālaya-saṁsthitām = amidst the residences of ascetics; bhrātuḥ = His brother’s; parṇa-kuṭīm = leaf-hut; śrīmān = the handsome; uṭajam = a thatched cottage; ca = and; dadarśa ha = saw.
Then while walking, the handsome Bharata saw His brother’s leaf-hut and a thatched cottage amidst the residences of ascetics.
Rāma’s leaf-hut and thatched cottage was similar in construction to the residences of ascetics. The leaf-hut was a leaf-cottage functioning as the place for keeping the sacred fire.
Bharata conjectured that these belonged to Rāma by identifying [certain] signs. He describes these signs from the next verse.
GLOSS. The thatched cottage was outside and Lakṣmaṇa’s place of residence.
