Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 99: Bharata Meets Rāma
Text 2.99.16
मत्कृते व्यसनं प्राप्तो लोकनाथो महाद्युतिः।
सर्वान्कामान्परित्यज्य वने वसति राघवः॥
mat-kṛte vyasanaṁ prāpto loka-nātho mahā-dyutiḥ
sarvān kāmān parityajya vane vasati rāghavaḥ
mat-kṛte = because of Me; vyasanam = a calamity; prāptaḥ = has attained; loka-nāthaḥ = the Lord of the world; mahā-dyutiḥ = of great effulgence; sarvān = all; kāmān = desirable objects; parityajya = having given up; vane = in a forest; vasati = He is living; rāghavaḥ = Rāma.
Rāma of great effulgence, the Lord of the world, has attained a calamity because of Me! Having given up all desirable objects, He is living in a forest!
Rāma attained a calamity, that is, He lost the kingdom [that was due to Him]. And this was because of Bharata. In other words, Kaikeyī had given the kingdom to Bharata.
