Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 100: Rāma Instructs Bharata About the Duties of a King
Text 2.100.4
क्व नु तेऽभूत्पिता तात यदरण्यं त्वमागतः।
न हि त्वं जीवतस्तस्य वनमागन्तुमर्हसि॥
kva nu te ’bhūt pītā tāta yad araṇyaṁ tvam āgataḥ
na hi tvaṁ jīvatas tasya vanam āgantum arhasi
kva nu = where; te = Your; abhūt = is; pītā = father; tāta = dear Bharata; yat = now that; araṇyam = to the forest; tvam = You; āgataḥ = have come; na hi = not; tvam = You; jīvataḥ tasya = while he is alive; vanam = to the forest; āgantum = have come; arhasi = should.
Dear Bharata, where is Your father now that You have come to the forest? You should not have come to the forest while he is alive.
It is implied that Bharata should not have come to the forest while His father was alive because Bharata should have menially served him and because His father would not have tolerated being away from Bharata.
It should be understood that Bharata did not answer this question upon noticing that Rāma asked Him [many] other related questions.
