sā tāta kaccit kausalyā sumitrā ca prajāvatī
sukhinī kaccid āryā ca devī nandati kaikayī
sā1 tāta = dear child; kaccit = are; kausalyā = Kausalyā-devī; sumitrā = Sumitrā-devī; ca = and; prajāvatī = the mother of an excellent son; sukhinī = happy; kaccit = is; āryā = the noble; ca = and; devī = devī; nandati = happy after obtaining the kingdom; kaikayī = Kaikeyī.
Dear child, are the noble Kausalyā-devī and Sumitrā-devī, the mother of an excellent son, happy? And is Kaikeyī-devī happy after obtaining the kingdom?
1 Technical note: sā kausalyā.
Sā indicates that Kausalyā had been distressed in the past. Was she now happy? Āryā (“noble”) indicates Rāma’s great respect to His mother.
