Chapter 100: Rāma Instructs Bharata About the Duties of a King
Text 2.100.12
कच्चिद्विनयसम्पन्नः कुलपुत्रो बहुश्रुतः।
अनसूयुरनुद्रष्टा सत्कृतस्ते पुरोहितः॥
kaccid vinaya-sampannaḥ kula-putro bahu-śrutaḥ
anasūyur anudraṣṭā satkṛtas te purohitaḥ
kaccit = is; vinaya-sampannaḥ = he is endowed with humility; kula-putraḥ = and is born in a good dynasty; bahu-śrutaḥ = he has learnt a lot; anasūyuḥ = is free from envy; anudraṣṭā = and is an assistant supervisor under Vasiṣṭha’s command; satkṛtaḥ = worshipped; te = by You; purohitaḥ = Your priest.
Is Your priest worshipped by You? He is endowed with humility and is born in a good dynasty. He has learnt a lot, is free from envy and is an assistant supervisor under Vasiṣṭha’s command.
“He is endowed with humility” indicates that Bharata’s priest was free from false ego. Some [authorities] state that this is a reference to Suyajña.
Rāma teaches through this verse that one should always honor one’s priest. One should derive similar lessons from the verses that follow.
