Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 102: Rāma Performs Śrāddha for King Daśaratha
Text 2.102.1
तां श्रुत्वा करुणां वाचं पितुर्मरणसंहिताम्।
राघवो भरतेनोक्तां बभूव गतचेतनः॥
tāṁ śrutvā karuṇāṁ vācaṁ pitur maraṇa-saṁhitām
rāghavo bharatenoktāṁ babhūva gata-cetanaḥ
tām = the; śrutvā = upon hearing; karuṇām = piteous; vācam = words; pituḥ = about their father’s; maraṇa-saṁhitām = death; rāghavaḥ = Rāghava; bharatena = by Bharata; uktām = spoken; babhūva = became; gata-cetanaḥ = unconscious.
Upon hearing the piteous words spoken by Bharata about Their father’s death, Rāghava became unconscious.
Tāṁ śrutvā karuṇām can also be read as tām śrutvā akaruṇām which will then indicate that Bharata’s words about Their father’s death hurt [Rāma].
