Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 102: Rāma Performs Śrāddha for King Daśaratha
Text 2.102.9

किं नु तस्य मया कार्यं दुर्जातेन महात्मनः।
यो मृतो मम शोकेन मया चापि न संस्कृतः॥

kiṁ nu tasya mayā kāryaṁ durjātena mahātmanaḥ
yo mṛto mama śokena mayā cāpi na saṁskṛtaḥ

kim nu = what should; tasya = for that; mayā = I; kāryam = do; durjātena = whose birth has become useless; mahātmanaḥ = great soul; yaḥ = who; mṛtaḥ = died; mama = about Me; śokena = in distress; mayā = I conduct; ca = and; api = even; na = did not; saṁskṛtaḥ = whose final rites.

What should I, whose birth has become useless, do for that great soul who died in distress about Me and even whose final rites I did not conduct?

Rāma considered that He was the cause of His father’s death and that He had been unfit to perform the final rites of His father and so criticized Himself thus.1

1 “He had been unfit to perform the final rites of His father” will be explained in the next verse.
