Chapter 102: Rāma Performs Śrāddha for King Daśaratha
Text 2.102.10
अहो भरत सिद्धार्थो येन राजा त्वयानघ।
शत्रुघ्नेन च सर्वेषु प्रेतकृत्येषु सत्कृतः॥
aho bharata siddhārtho yena rājā tvayānagha
śatrughnena ca sarveṣu preta-kṛtyeṣu sat-kṛtaḥ
aho = ah; bharata = Bharata; siddha-arthaḥ = Your purposed have been achieved; yena rājā = for the king; tvayā = by You; anagha = sinless; śatrughnena = Śatrughna; ca = and; sarveṣu = all; preta-kṛtyeṣu = through the final rites; sat-kṛtaḥ = has been honored.
Ah, sinless Bharata, Your purposes have been achieved for the king has been honored by You and Śatrughna through all the final rites!
Anagha indicates that Bharata was free from the sin that removes the good fortune to perform the final rites for one’s father (putram antye tu karmaṇi).1
[Rāma intended to tell Bharata,] “Therefore You and Śatrughna could honor the king by performing all of the necessary final rites. I am not as sinless [as both of You].”2
