Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 102: Rāma Performs Śrāddha for King Daśaratha
Text 2.102.28

ततो मन्दाकिनीतीरात्प्रत्युत्तीर्य स राघवः।
पितुश्चकार तेजस्वी निवापं भ्रातृभिः सह॥

tato mandākinī-tīrāt pratyuttīrya sa rāghavaḥ
pituś cakāra tejasvī nivāpaṁ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha

tataḥ = then; mandākinī-tīrāt = from the bank of Mandākinī; pratyuttīrya = climbed up; saḥ rāghavaḥ = descendant of Raghu; pituḥ = to His father; cakāra = offered; tejasvī = the powerful; nivāpam = a śrāddha oblation; bhrātṛbhiḥ saha = and with His brothers.

Then the powerful descendant of Raghu climbed up from the bank of Mandākinī and, with His brothers, offered a śrāddha oblation to His father.1

It is inferred that this offering of piṇḍa is the sapiṇḍī-karaṇa ritual because Rāma went to a place nearby to offer piṇḍa. One cannot do this without offering water [to the departed soul] after ten days [of the death of departed soul]. Lakṣmaṇa, a younger son, cannot offer [that] piṇḍa [in the presence of an elder son].

1 It is performed to place the departed soul in Pitṛloka.
