महाबलानां रुदतां कुर्वतामुदकं पितुः।
विज्ञाय तुमुलं शब्दं त्रस्ता भरतसैनिकाः॥
अब्रुवंश्चापि रामेण भरतः सङ्गतो ध्रुवम्।
तेषामेव महाञ्छब्दः शोचतां पितरं मृतम्॥
mahā-balānāṁ rudatāṁ kurvatām udakaṁ pituḥ
vijñāya tumulaṁ śabdaṁ trastā bharata-sainikāḥ
abruvaṁś cāpi rāmeṇa bharataḥ saṅgato dhruvam
teṣām eva mahāñ chabdaḥ śocatāṁ pitaraṁ mṛtam
mahā-balānām = of the greatly powerful sons of Daśaratha; rudatām = was the crying; kurvatām = who were offering; udakam = water; pituḥ = Their father; vijñāya = understood that; tumulam = this tumultuous; śabdam = sound; trastāḥ = and became alarmed; bharata-sainikāḥ = Bharata’s soldiers; abruvan ca api = they then said; rāmeṇa = Rāma; bharataḥ = Bharata; saṅgataḥ = has met; dhruvam = certainly; teṣām = the sound of Them; eva = certainly; mahān = this great; śabdaḥ = sound is; śocatām = lamenting; pitaram mṛtam = about their dead father.
Bharata’s soldiers understood that this tumultuous sound was the crying of the greatly powerful sons of Daśaratha who were offering Their father water and became alarmed. They then said, “Bharata has certainly met Rāma. This great sound is certainly the sound of Them lamenting about Their dead father.”
[First] Bharata’s soldiers became alarmed in thought, “Now what will happen?” Then they ascertained [that the brothers must have united] and spoke to themselves.
