Chapter 103: Rāma Meets His Mothers and Vasiṣṭha
Text 2.103.25-2

पद्ममातपसंतप्तं परिक्लिष्टमिवोत्पलम्।
काञ्चनं रजसा ध्वस्तं क्लिष्टं चन्द्रमिवाम्बुदैः॥

मुखं ते प्रेक्ष्य मां शोको दहत्यग्निरिवाश्रयम्।
भृशं मनसि वैदेहि व्यसनारणिसंभवः॥

padmam ātapa-santaptaṁ parikliṣṭam ivotpalam
kāñcanaṁ rajasā dhvastaṁ kliṣṭaṁ candram ivāmbudaiḥ

mukhaṁ te prekṣya māṁ śoko dahaty agnir ivāśrayam
bhṛśaṁ manasi vaidehi vyasanāraṇi-sambhavaḥ

padmam = a lotus; ātapa-santaptam = that is scorched by the heat; parikliṣṭam = that has faded; iva = is like; utpalam = like a water lily; kāñcanam = gold; rajasā = by dust; dhvastam = defiled; kliṣṭam = obscured; candram = and like the moon; iva = like; ambudaiḥ = by the clouds; mukham = face; te = your; prekṣya = upon seeing it; mām = me; śokaḥ = the grief; dahati = burns up; agniḥ = a fire [burning]; iva = like; āśrayam = its fuel; bhṛśam = severely; manasi = in my mind; vaidehi = Vaidehī; vyasana-araṇi-sambhavaḥ = born from the araṇi wood of calamity.

Vaidehī, your face is like a lotus that is scorched by the heat, like a water lily that has faded, like gold defiled by dust and like the moon obscured by the clouds. Upon seeing it, the grief born from the araṇi wood of calamity in my mind severely burns me like a fire [burning] its fuel.
