Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 104: Bharata Beseeches Rāma to Rule the Kingdom
Text 2.104.14
एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुः सबाष्पः कैकयीसुतः।
रामस्य शिरसा पादौ जग्राह विधिवत्पुनः॥
evam uktvā mahā-bāhuḥ sabāṣpaḥ kaikayī-sutaḥ
rāmasya śirasā pādau jagrāha bharataḥ punaḥ
evam = this; uktvā = having said; mahā-bāhuḥ = mighty-armed; sabāṣpaḥ = with tears [in His eyes]; kaikayī-sutaḥ = the son of Kaikeyī; rāmasya = to Rāma’s; śirasā = His head; pādau = feet; jagrāha = touched; bharataḥ = Bharata; punaḥ = again.
Having said this, mighty-armed Bharata, the son of Kaikeyī, with tears [in His eyes] again touched His head to Rāma’s feet.
Bharata is referred to here as the son of Kaikeyī to imply that He is in this state because of His mother’s fault. “Again” indicates that Bharata had previously pleaded and then surrendered unto Rāma.
