अनार्यस्त्वार्यसंकाशः शौचाद्धीनस्तथा शुचिः।
लक्षण्यवदलक्षण्यो दुःशीलः शीलवानिव॥
अधर्मं धर्मवेषेण यदीमं लोकसंकरम्।
अभिपत्स्ये शुभं हित्वा क्रियाविधिविवर्जितम्॥
कश्चेतयानः पुरुषः कार्याकार्यविचक्षणः।
बहुमंस्यति मां लोके दुर्वृत्तं लोकदूषणम्॥
anāryas tv ārya-saṅkāśaḥ śaucād dhīnas tathā śuciḥ
lakṣaṇyavad alakṣaṇyo duḥśīlaḥ śīlavān iva
adharmaṁ dharma-veṣeṇa yadīmaṁ loka-saṅkaram
abhipatsye śubhaṁ hitvā kriyā-vidhi-vivarjitam
kaś cetayānaḥ puruṣaḥ kāryākārya-vicakṣaṇaḥ
bahu-maṁsyati māṁ loke durvṛttaṁ loka-dūṣaṇam
anāryaḥ tu = I am uncivilized; ārya-saṅkāśaḥ = but I portray Myself as being civilized; śaucāt = purity; hīnaḥ = devoid of; tathā = and; śuciḥ = pure; lakṣaṇyavat = with auspicious characteristics; alakṣaṇyaḥ = without auspicious characteristics; duḥśīlaḥ = and of bad character; śīlavān iva = good character; adharmam = the adharma spoken by you; dharma-veṣeṇa = to be dharma; yadi = if; imam = that; imam loka-saṅkaram = which creates a varṇa-saṅkara population; abhipatsye = and consider; śubham = the means for auspiciousness; hitvā = giving up Vedic dharma; kriyā-vidhi-vivarjitam = and which is devoid of Vedic principles and regulations; kaḥ = which; cetayānaḥ = of knowledge; puruṣaḥ = man; kārya-akārya-vicakṣaṇaḥ = who can discriminate between what should be done and what should not be done; bahu-maṁsyati = will honor; mām = Me; loke = in this world; durvṛttam = whose conduct will be evil; loka-dūṣaṇam = and who will spoil the world.
Giving up Vedic dharma which is the means for auspiciousness, if I am uncivilized, devoid of purity, without auspicious characteristics and of bad character but I portray Myself as being civilized, pure, with auspicious characteristics and good character, and consider the adharma spoken by you, which creates a varṇa-saṅkara population and which is devoid of Vedic performances and regulations, to be dharma, which man of knowledge who can discriminate between what should be done and what should not be done in this world will honor Me whose conduct will be evil and who will spoil the world?1
1 This means: “Vedic dharma is the means for auspiciousness. If I give it up, I will become uncivilized though I portray myself as being civilized; I will become devoid of purity though I may present Myself as being pure; I will be without any auspicious characteristic though I may display features of auspiciousness; I will be of bad character though I may appear to be of good character. The adharma spoken by you creates a varṇa-saṅkara population; it is also devoid of Vedic performances and regulations. If I consider this adharma to be dharma, which man of knowledge will honor Me? A man of knowledge can discriminate between what should be done and what should not be done. If I consider this adharma to be dharma, My conduct will be evil and it will spoil the world.”
