कामवृत्तस्त्वयं लोकः कृत्स्नः समुपवर्तते।
यद्वृत्ताः सन्ति राजानस्तद्वृत्ताः सन्ति हि प्रजाः॥
kāma-vṛttas tv ayaṁ lokaḥ kṛtsnaḥ samupavartate
yad-vṛttāḥ santi rājānas tad-vṛttāḥ santi hi prajāḥ
kāma-vṛttaḥ tu = whatever they like; ayam = this; lokaḥ = world; kṛtsnaḥ = entire; samupavartate = will start doing; yat-vṛttāḥ = the way; santi = behave; rājānaḥ = their kings; tat-vṛttāḥ santi = behave; hi = for; prajāḥ = the citizens.
This entire world will start doing whatever they like for the citizens behave the way their kings behave.1
1 Rāma and His intelligent listeners didn’t need to consider further the nightmare that would come out of a society that does not value honesty. How can such a society function properly, even from the mundane perspective? How can families be intact? How can justice be established? How can law and order be maintained? How will the military function? How can schools run properly? Communities would be nothing but jungles where might is right. This will lead to nothing but hell on earth.
