Chapter 109: Rāma Refutes Jābāli
Text 2.109.28
कर्मभूमिमिमां प्राप्य कर्तव्यं कर्म यच्छुभम्।
अग्निर्वायुश्च सोमश्च कर्मणां फलभागिनः॥
karma-bhūmim imāṁ prāpya kartavyaṁ karma yac chubham
agnir vāyuś ca somaś ca karmaṇāṁ phalabhāginaḥ
karma-bhūmim = land of prescribed duties; imām = in this; prāpya = having arrived; kartavyam = are meant to be carried out; karma = activities; yat śubham = auspicious; agniḥ = Agni; vāyuḥ = Vāyu; ca = and; somaḥ = Soma; ca = so on; karmaṇām = of those activities are; phalabhāginaḥ = by the people for the results.
Having arrived in this land of prescribed duties, auspicious activities are meant to be carried out by the people for the results of those activities are Agni, Vāyu, Soma and so on.
Rāma now refutes Jābāli’s contention that Vedic activities are useless while referring to the annual aṣṭakā-śrāddha and pitṛ-daivatya rituals.
Those who perform their specific duties in the land of prescribed duties attain the results by becoming Agni, Vāyu, Soma and so on.
