इति ब्रुवन्तं वचनं सरोषं रामं महात्मानमदीनसत्त्वम्।
उवाच तथ्यं पुनरास्तिकं च सत्यं वचः सानुनयं च विप्रः।।
iti bruvantaṁ vacanaṁ saroṣaṁ
rāmaṁ mahātmānam adīna-sattvam
uvāca tathyaṁ punar āstikaṁ ca
satyaṁ vacaḥ sānunayaṁ ca vipraḥ
iti = when; bruvantam = spoke; vacanam = these words; saroṣam = in anger; rāmam = Rāma; mahā-ātmānam = the great soul; adīna-sattvam = of superior strength; uvāca = spoke; tathyam = of truth; punaḥ = again; āstikam ca = that affirmed his acceptance of the existence of the soul; satyam = for the benefit of the saintly; vacaḥ = the following words; sa-anunayam ca = humbly; vipraḥ = the brāhmaṇa Jābāli.
When the great soul Rāma of superior strength spoke these words in anger, the brāhmaṇa Jābāli humbly spoke the following words of truth that again affirmed his acceptance of the existence of the soul for the benefit of the saintly.1
1 Acceptance of the existence of the soul refers to accepting that there is a soul that reincarnates according to its karma. This is one of the meanings of āstikya.
