Chapter 114: Ayodhyā’s loss of Splendor
Text 2.114.11
सहसा चलितां स्थानान्महीं पुण्यक्षयाद्गताम्।
संहृतद्युतिविस्तारां तारामिव दिवश्च्युताम्॥
sahasā calitāṁ sthānān mahīṁ puṇya-kṣayād gatām
saṁhṛta-dyuti-vistārāṁ tārām iva divaś cyutām
sahasā = suddenly; calitām = which had been pushed off; sthānān = from its position; mahīm = to the earth; puṇya-kṣayāt = the end of its piety; gatām = upon reaching; saṁhṛta-dyuti-vistārām = and devoid of its great brilliance; tārām = a star; iva = Ayodhyā resembled; divaḥ = from the sky; cyutām = a star that had [therefore] fallen.
Ayodhyā resembled a star which had been suddenly pushed off from its position and devoid of its great brilliance upon reaching the end of its piety, a star that had [therefore] fallen from the sky to the earth.
