Chapter 115: Bharata Goes to Nandigrāma
Text 2.115.14
एतद्राज्यं मम भ्रात्रा दत्तं संन्यासवत्स्वयम्।
योगक्षेमवहे चेमे पादुके हेमभूषिते॥
etad rājyaṁ mama bhrātrā dattaṁ sannyāsavat svayam
yoga-kṣemavahe ceme pāduke hema-bhūṣite
etat = this; rājyam = kingdom; mama = My; bhrātrā = brother; dattam = has given Me; sannyāsavat = as a deposit; svayam = personally; yoga-kṣemavahe = which will provide yoga-kṣema [to the kingdom]; ca = as well as; ime = these; pāduke = sandals; hema-bhūṣite = decorated with gold.
My brother has personally given Me this kingdom as a deposit as well as these sandals decorated with gold which will provide yoga-kṣema [to the kingdom].
Bharata did not want the public to criticize Him by saying that in reality Bharata is ruling the kingdom using the pretext of His mother’s boon. Therefore He speaks this verse.
Sannyāsavat (“as a deposit”) indicates that the kingdom had been given to Bharata to be well preserved. It is hinted here that it should be returned back to Lord Rāma without any loss. Yoga-kṣemavahe (“which will provide yoga-kṣema”) indicates that Bharata wouldn’t independently protect the kingdom that had been deposited with Him.
