सदृशाच्चापकृष्टाच्च लोके कन्यापिता जनात्।
प्रधर्षणामवाप्नोति शक्रेणापि समो भुवि॥
sadṛśāc cāpakṛṣṭāc ca loke kanyā-pitā janāt
pradharṣaṇām avāpnoti śakreṇāpi samo bhuvi
sadṛśāt ca = both equal; apakṛṣṭāt = inferior to him; ca = and; loke = in the world; kanyā-pitā = a father of an unmarried virgin girl; janāt = by the people; pradharṣaṇām avāpnoti = is criticized; śakreṇa = to Indra; api = even if; samaḥ = he is equal; bhuvi = on earth.
A father of an unmarried virgin girl, even if he is equal to Indra on earth, is criticized by the people, both equal and inferior to him, in the world.1
1 “A father of an unmarried virgin girl” refers to the father of a girl who has attained puberty and is yet unmarried. According to the Dharma-śāstras, he should give her in marriage before she attains puberty.
