Chapter 118: Conversation Between Sītā and Anasūyā
Text 2.118.37
अयोनिजां हि मां ज्ञात्वा नाध्यगच्छद्विचिन्तयन्।
सदृशं चानुरूपं च महीपालः पतिं मम॥
ayonijāṁ hi māṁ jñātvā nādhyagacchad vicintayan
sadṛśaṁ cānurūpaṁ ca mahī-pālaḥ patiṁ mama
ayonijām hi = not born from the womb [of any woman of this world]; mām = I was; jñātvā = knew that; na adhyagacchat = he was unable to find; vicintayan = [inspite of] his deep deliberation; sadṛśam ca = a similar; anurūpam = suitable; ca = and; mahī-pālaḥ = the king; patim = husband; mama = for me.
The king knew that I was not born from the womb [of any woman of this world]. [Inspite of] his deep deliberation, he was unable to find a similar and suitable husband for me.
Sadṛśam (“similar”) indicates that the prospective husband had to be equal in terms of birth, source of livelihood and so on. Anurūpam (“suitable”) indicates that he had to be fit for her in terms of his manifested youth, unparalleled beauty, charm and so on.
