Chapter 3: Virādha Carries Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa
Text 3.3.3
तमुवाच ततो रामो राक्षसं ज्वलिताननम्।
पृच्छन्तं सुमहातेजा इक्ष्वाकुकुलमात्मनः॥
tam uvāca tato rāmo rākṣasaṁ jvalitānanam
pṛcchantaṁ sumahā-tejā ikṣvāku-kulam ātmanaḥ
tam = the; uvāca = told; tataḥ = then; rāmaḥ = Rāma; rākṣasam = rākṣasa; jvalita-ānanam = who had a blazing face; pṛcchantam = inquiring; sumahā-tejāḥ = who possessed very great prowess; ikṣvāku-kulam = Ikṣvāku dynasty; ātmanaḥ = about His.
Rāma who possessed very great prowess then told the inquiring rākṣasa who had a blazing face about His Ikṣvāku dynasty.
Virādha’s face naturally blazed because he was a rākṣasa, indicating that he was dangerous.
Rāma told Virādha about His Ikṣvāku dynasty, that is, Rāma informed him that Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa were sons of Daśaratha who had taken birth in the Ikṣvāku dynasty and that They had come to the forest on the order of Their father.
