क्षत्रियौ वृत्तसम्पन्नौ विद्धि नौ वनगोचरौ।
त्वां तु वेदितुमिच्छावः कस्त्वं चरसि दण्डकान्॥
kṣatriyau vṛtta-sampannau viddhi nau vana-gocarau
tvāṁ tu veditum icchāvaḥ kas tvaṁ carasi daṇḍakān
kṣatriyau = to be kṣatriyas; vṛtta-sampannau = following the conduct [appropriate to our dynasty]; viddhi = know; nau = Us; vana-gocarau = and who have come to [this] forest; tvām = about You; tu = but; veditum = to know; icchāvaḥ = We want; kaḥ = who; tvam = are you; carasi = you are wandering about; daṇḍakān = in the forests of Daṇḍaka.
Know Us to be kṣatriyas following the conduct [appropriate to our dynasty] and who have come to [this] forest.1 But We want to know about You. You are wandering about in the forests of Daṇḍaka. Who are you?
1 Technical note: vṛtta-sampannau sva-kulocita-vṛtta-viśiṣṭau. Rāmāyaṇa-bhāva-dīpa: vanaṁ gocaro yayos tau. yadvā vanasya yā gaur bhūs tasyāṁ carata iti tau tathoktau. . . . yadvā gavi carato gocarau vanasya gocarau vanagocarau.
In text 3.2.11, Virādha had accused Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa of engaging in adharma and being sinful. Here Rāma responds to that. Rāma wanted to know whose son Virādha was. He wanted to know about his prowess.
This is not a question about Virādha’s name or caste because he had already stated those in text 3.2.12:
ahaṁ vanam idaṁ durgaṁ virādho nāma rākṣasaḥ
carāmi sāyudho nityam ṛṣi-māṁsāni bhakṣayan
“I [am] a rākṣasa named Virādha. Eating the flesh of ṛṣis, I always wander in this inaccessible forest with my weapons.”
