Chapter 5: Rāma Meets Sage Śarabhaṅga
Text 3.5.5

अवरुह्य रथोत्सङ्गात्सकाशे विबुधानुगम्।
असंस्पृशन्तं वसुधां ददर्श विबुधेश्वरम्॥

avaruhya rathotsaṅgāt sakāśe vibudhānugam
asaṁspṛśantaṁ vasudhāṁ dadarśa vibudheśvaram

avaruhya = [Indra] had descended; ratha-utsaṅgāt = from his chariot; sakāśe = were near [him]; vibudha-anugam = his demigod followers; asamspṛśantam = [but] he didn’t touch; vasudhām = the earth; dadarśa = [Rāma] saw; vibudha-īśvaram = the king of the demigods.

[Rāma] saw the king of the demigods. [Indra] had descended from his chariot [but] he didn’t touch the earth.1 His demigod followers were near [him].

This is what Lord Rāma saw after He came a little closer [to Śarabhaṅga]. Indra didn’t touch the earth because it is the nature of the devas to not touch the earth.1

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: rathotsaṅgāt ratha-taṭāt.

1 Indra’s feet didn’t touch the earth. The devas’ feet don’t touch the earth.
