राघवेणैवमुक्तस्तु शक्रतुल्यबलेन वै।।
शरभङ्गो महाप्राज्ञः पुनरेवाब्रवीद्वचः॥
rāghaveṇaivam uktas tu śakra-tulya-balena vai
śarabhaṅgo mahā-prājñaḥ punar eva abravīd vacaḥ
rāghaveṇa = when Rāghava; evam = thus; uktaḥ tu = spoke; śakra-tulya-balena vai = who was as powerful as Indra; śarabhaṅgaḥ = Śarabhaṅga; mahā-prājñaḥ = of great intelligence; punaḥ eva = again; abravīt = spoke; vacaḥ = [the following] words.
When Rāghava who was as powerful as Indra spoke thus, Śarabhaṅga of great intelligence spoke [the following] words again.1
1 Indra wanted to take Śarabhaṅga to Brahmaloka. However, Śarabhaṅga wanted to go to the spiritual world Vaikuṇṭha and so he wanted to give away all the pious credits that he had accumulated, with which one can go to Brahmaloka, to Lord Rāma who eagerly accepted them. By this action, Lord Rāma effectively canceled Indra’s arrangement to have Śarabhaṅga taken to Brahmaloka. This appears to be the reason for the sage Vālmīki’s description of Lord Rāmacandra as being as powerful as Indra.
Mahā-prājña (“of great intelligence”) indicates that [the sage Śarabhaṅga] thought of the destruction of Mārīca in the form of deer.
