Chapter 6: The Sages Inform Rāma About the Rākṣasas Torturing Them
Text 3.6.17

पम्पानदीनिवासानामनुमन्दाकिनीमपि।।
चित्रकूटालयानां च क्रियते कदनं महत्॥

pampā-nadī-nivāsānām anumandākinīm api
citrakūṭālayānāṁ ca kriyate kadanaṁ mahat

pampā-nadī-nivāsānām = upon those who reside by the river Pampā; anumandākinīm = the river that flowed past Śarabhaṅga’s āśrama; api = and; citrakūṭa-ālayānām = the residents of Citrakūṭa; ca = as well as; kriyate = is inflicted; kadanam = violence; mahat = great.

Great violence is inflicted upon those who reside by the river Pampā and the river that flowed past Śarabhaṅga’s āśrama as well as the residents of Citrakūṭa.1

GLOSS. [The glossator renders this verse thus:] “Great violence is inflicted upon those who reside by Pampā, other earthly rivers and the heavenly river Mandākinī as well as the residents of Citrakūṭa.”

NOTE. Rāmāyaṇa 2.119.19 notes which sages were attacked by the rākṣasas:

ucchiṣṭaṁ vā pramattaṁ vā tāpasaṁ dharmacāriṇam
adanty asmin mahāraṇye tān nivāraya rāghava

“Rāghava, they devour any dhārmika ascetic who is impure or inattentive in this great forest. Restrain these rākṣasas!”
