Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 6: The Sages Inform Rāma About the Rākṣasas Torturing Them
Text 3.6.18

एवं वयं न मृष्यामो विप्रकारं तपस्विनाम्।
क्रियमाणं वने घोरं रक्षोभिर्भीमकर्मभिः॥

evaṁ vayaṁ na mṛṣyāmo viprakāraṁ tapasvinām
kriyamāṇaṁ vane ghoraṁ rakṣobhir bhīma-karmabhiḥ

evam = such; vayam = we; na mṛṣyāmaḥ = cannot tolerate; viprakāram = tortures 3; tapasvinām = upon ascetics; kriyamāṇam = inflicted; vane = in the forest; ghoram = terrible; rakṣobhiḥ = by rākṣasas; bhīma-karmabhiḥ = who engage in terrible acts.

We cannot tolerate such terrible tortures inflicted upon ascetics in the forest by rākṣasas who engage in terrible acts.

They imply that the pain of their fellow sages was unendurable [to them].1

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: sva-jana-pīḍā duḥsaheti bhāvaḥ.
