Chapter 9: Sītā Requests Rāma to Give up His Weapons
Text 3.9.8
तच्च सर्वं महाबाहो शक्यं धर्तुं जितेन्द्रियैः।
तव वश्येन्द्रियत्वं च जानामि शुभदर्शन॥
tac ca sarvaṁ mahā-bāho śakyaṁ dhartuṁ jitendriyaiḥ
tava vaśyendriyatvaṁ ca jānāmi śubha-darśana
tat ca = features that; sarvam = all; mahā-bāho = O mighty-armed one; śakyam = can; dhartum = be possessed; jita-indriyaiḥ = [only] by the sense controlled; tava = about Your; vaśya-indriyatvam = Your sense control; ca = as well as; jānāmi = I know; śubha-darśana = O one of auspicious appearance.
O mighty-armed one, O one of auspicious appearance, I know all about Your features that can be possessed [only] by the sense controlled as well as Your sense control.
On the basis of her experience, she now confirms that Rāma does not experience the first two calamities. She does this because she wants to tell Him that the third calamity is found in Him.
Śubha-darśana (“O one of auspicious appearance”) indicates that Rāma’s appearance is itself the evidence for His possession of these qualities found in the sense controlled, as noted in the Śruti 1.
“You have gotten rid of the first two calamities. Somehow You should give up the third calamity also.” With this thought in mind, she speaks the next verse.
