Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 9: Sītā Requests Rāma to Give up His Weapons
Text 3.9.14
त्वं हि बाणधनुष्पाणिर्भ्रात्रा सह वनं गतः।
दृष्ट्वा वनचरान्सर्वान्कच्चित्कुर्याश्शरव्ययम्॥
tvaṁ hi bāṇa-dhanuṣ-pāṇir bhrātrā saha vanaṁ gataḥ
dṛṣṭvā vanacarān sarvān kaccit kuryāḥ śara-vyayam
tvam hi = You; bāṇa-dhanuḥ-pāṇiḥ = with a bow and arrows in Your hand; bhrātrā = Your brother; saha = with; vanam = to the forest; gataḥ = have come; dṛṣṭvā = upon seeing; vanacarān = forest creature; sarvān = any; kaccit = will; kuryāḥ śara-vyayam = You release Your arrows.
With bow and arrows in Your hand, You have come with Your brother to the forest. Will You release Your arrows upon seeing any forest creature?1
Kaccit also indicates that Sītā-devī wanted to tell Lord Rāma in distress, “Alas, You will release Your arrows upon seeing all forest creatures.”1
She then anticipates that Rāmacandra might say, “Then I will not release My arrows” and states the next verse.
