Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 11: Rāma Goes to Agastya’s Āśrama
Text 3.11.39
योजनान्याश्रमादस्मात्तथा चत्वारि वै ततः।
दक्षिणेन महाञ्छ्रीमानगस्त्यभ्रातुराश्रमः॥
yojanāny āśramād asmāt tathā catvāri vai tataḥ
dakṣiṇena mahāñ chrīmān agastya-bhrātur āśramaḥ
yojanāni = yojanas; āśramāt = āśrama; asmāt = from this; tathā = here; catvāri vai = four; tataḥ = towards; dakṣiṇena = the south; mahān = is a large; śrīmān = and beautiful; agastya-bhrātuḥ = of Agastya’s brother; āśramaḥ = āśrama.
Four yojanas from this āśrama here, towards the south, is a large and beautiful āśrama of Agastya’s brother.
Tathā indicates that the sage is pointing out the way with his hand. He wants to say, “Go for four yojanas.”
NOTE. According to the commentary on Rāmāyaṇa 1.1.39, Agastya’s brother’s name was Sudarśana.
