Chapter 11: Rāma Goes to Agastya’s Āśrama
Text 3.11.86
नाम्ना चेयं भगवतो दक्षिणा दिक्प्रदक्षिणा।
प्रथिता त्रिषु लोकेषु दुर्धर्षा क्रूरकर्मभिः॥
nāmnā ceyaṁ bhagavato dakṣiṇā dik pradakṣiṇā
prathitā triṣu lokeṣu durdharṣā krūra-karmabhiḥ
nāmnā ca = even by name; iyam = this; bhagavataḥ = as the powerful sage’s [region]; dakṣiṇā = southern; dik = region; pradakṣiṇā = most auspicious; prathitā = is famous; triṣu = in the three; lokeṣu = worlds; durdharṣā = and unassailable; krūra-karmabhiḥ = by those who engage in acts of cruelty.
Even by name, this most auspicious southern region is famous as the powerful sage’s [region] in the three worlds and unassailable by those who engage in acts of cruelty.
The southern region is famous as the region of Agastya.
GLOSS. This verse means: “By the greatness of the powerful Agastya, this region is unassailable by rākṣasas who perform cruel acts. Because it is most magnanimous [in allowing everyone to reside here], it is famous in the three worlds as dakṣiṇa (‘south’).”
