Chapter 12: Agastya Requests Rāma to Protect the Sages
Text 3.12.3
लक्ष्मणो नाम तस्याहं भ्राता त्ववरजो हितः।
अनुकूलश्च भक्तश्च यदि ते श्रोत्रमागतः॥
lakṣmaṇo nāma tasyāhaṁ bhrātā tv avarajo hitaḥ
anukūlaś ca bhaktaś ca yadi te śrotram āgataḥ
lakṣmaṇaḥ = Lakṣmaṇa; nāma = named; tasya = am His; aham = I; bhrātā tu = brother; avarajaḥ = younger; hitaḥ = well-wisher; anukūlaḥ ca = [His] pleasing; bhaktaḥ = devotee; ca = and; yadi = may be; te śrotram āgataḥ = you have heard of Us.
I am His younger brother named Lakṣmaṇa, [His] pleasing well-wisher and devotee. May be you have heard of Us.
Hitaḥ (“well-wisher”) refers to one who good [to the object of his good wishes]. Anukūlaḥ (“pleasing”) refers to one who is pleasing [to the object of his good wishes]. The reason why Lakṣmaṇa was Rāma’s pleasing well-wisher is that He was Rāma’s devotee, that is, affectionate to Him. Lakṣmaṇa has described Rāma as the eldest [son of Daśaratha] and so on to avoid the misconception that He is equal to Rāma.
