स तं पितृसखं बुद्ध्वा पूजयामास राघवः।
स तस्य कुलमव्यग्रमथ पप्रच्छ नाम च॥
sa taṁ pitṛ-sakhaṁ buddhvā pūjayām āsa rāghavaḥ
sa tasya kulam avyagram atha papraccha nāma ca
saḥ = the; tam = him; pitṛ-sakham = to be a friend of His father; buddhvā = understanding; pūjayām āsa = honored him; rāghavaḥ = descendant of Raghu; saḥ = He; tasya = his; kulam = lineage; avyagram = quietly; atha = and; papraccha = inquired about; nāma ca = name.
Understanding him to be a friend of His father, the descendant of Raghu honored him.1 He quietly inquired about his lineage and name.
1 Even though Jaṭāyu was a bird, Lord Rāma honored him because he was a friend of His worshippable father, King Daśaratha. An important lesson to derive from this incident is that one should similarly honor the Vaiṣṇavas, the devotees of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, without considering their birth. They might have taken birth in a high or a low family, but once they surrender unto His lotus feet in full obedience to His instructions as taught in the scriptures, they should be honored. They should be allowed to enter all temples where the Supreme Lord or His representatives are worshipped, and be previleged according to their current spiritual status. Another lesson to learn from this incident is that we should adequately honor the equals of our worshippable authorities.
