Chapter 14: Śrī Rāma Meets Jaṭāyu
Text 3.14.14
अदित्यां जज्ञिरे देवास्त्रयस्त्रिंशदरिंदम।
आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा ह्यश्विनौ च परंतप॥
adityāṁ jajñire devās trayastriṁśad arindama
ādityā vasavo rudrā hy aśvinau ca parantapa
adityām = Aditi; jajñire = gave birth; devāḥ = devas; trayastriṁśat = to thirty-three; arindama = O subduer of enemies; ādityāḥ = ādityas; vasavaḥ = vasus; rudrāḥ hi = rudras; aśvinau = the two aśvins; ca = and; parantapa = and scorcher of opponents.
O subduer of enemies and scorcher of opponents, Aditi gave birth to thirty-three devas: ādityas, vasus, rudras and the two aśvins.
There were twelve ādityas, eight vasus, eleven rudras and two aśvins. Thus there were thirty-three devas.
