Chapter 16: Lakṣmaṇa’s Description of Winter
Text 3.16.40
कदान्वहं समेष्यामि भरतेन महात्मना।
शत्रुघ्नेन च वीरेण त्वया च रघुनन्दन॥
kadā nv ahaṁ sameṣyāmi bharatena mahātmanā
śatrughnena ca vīreṇa tvayā ca raghu-nandana
kadā nu = oh, when; aham = I; sameṣyāmi = will meet; bharatena = Bharata; mahā-ātmanā = the great soul; śatrughnena ca = Śatrughna; vīreṇa = the hero; tvayā = You; ca = and; raghu-nandana = O beloved child of the Raghus.
Oh, when will I meet the great soul Bharata, the hero Śatrughna and You, O beloved child of the Raghus?
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: bharata-snehātiśaya-prakāro ’yam.
In the absence of Bharata, Śrī Rāmacandra considers Himself to be forsaken even though He was with Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa. This is because of an increase of affection for Bharata.1
