प्रख्यातवीर्यौ च रणे भ्रातरौ खरदूषणौ।
तानहं समतिक्रान्ता राम त्वा पूर्वदर्शनात्।
समुपेतास्मि भावेन भर्तारं पुरुषोत्तमम्॥
prakhyāta-vīryau ca raṇe bhrātarau khara-dūṣaṇau
tān ahaṁ samatikrāntā rāma tvāpūrva-darśanāt
samupetāsmi bhāvena bhartāraṁ puruṣottamam
prakhyāta-vīryau ca = are renowned for their prowess; raṇe = in battle; bhrātarau = my brothers; khara-dūṣaṇau = Khara and Dūṣaṇa; tān = my brothers; aham = I; samatikrāntā = surpassing; rāma = O Rāma; tvā = You; apūrva-darśanāt = because of Your unprecedented appearance; samupetā asmi = have approached; bhāvena = with my heart; bhartāram = to make my husband; puruṣa-uttamam = the best of males.
O Rāma, my brothers Khara and Dūṣaṇa are renowned for their prowess in battle. Surpassing my brothers, I have approached You, the best of males, with my heart to make You my husband because of Your unprecedented appearance.1
Khara and Dūṣaṇa were residents of Janasthāna. By referring to her brothers, she wanted to assure Rāma that He need not be afraid of her family. “Surpassing my brothers” indicates that Śūrpaṇakhā could conduct herself as she liked. Tvāpūrva-darśanāt can be read as tvā pūrva-darśanāt [which indicates that she considered that Rāma would be her husband] ever since she saw Him for the first time. Rāma’s appearance was unprecedented [for her] among devas, dānavas and mortal humans. She approached Rāma in conjugal love.1 She did so because He was the best of males.
She then considered that Rāma might think, “When Sītā is [here with Me], why would I need you?” and spoke the following verse.
