Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 19: Khara Sends Fourteen Rākṣasas to Destroy Rāma
Text 3.19.7
न हि पश्याम्यहं लोके यः कुर्यान्मम विप्रियम्।
अन्तरेण सहस्राक्षं महेन्द्रं पाकशासनम्॥
na hi paśyāmy aham loke yaḥ kuryān mama vipriyam
antareṇa sahasrākṣaṁ mahendraṁ pāka-śāsanam
na hi paśyāmi = don’t see anyone; aham = I; loke = in this world; yaḥ = who; kuryāt = could; mama = me; vipriyam = displease; antareṇa = other than; sahasra-akṣam = the thousand-eyed; mahā-indram = great Indra; pāka-śāsanam = who disciplined Pākāsura.
I don’t see anyone in this world who could displease me other than the thousand-eyed great Indra who disciplined Pākāsura.1
1 Pākāsura is said to be Vṛtrāsura’s brother. Technical note: pākaṁ pākākhyaṁ vṛtrāsura-bhrātaraṁ śāsitavān iti pāka-śāsanam.
Indra has been described as “thousand-eyed” and “who disciplined Pākāsura” to indicate his special pride.
