Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 21: Śūrpaṇakhā Impels Khara to Attack Rāma
Text 3.21.10

तान्दृष्ट्वा पतितान्भूमौ क्षणेनैव महाबलान्।
रामस्य च महत्कर्म महांस्त्रासोऽभवन्मम॥

tān dṛṣṭvā patitān bhūmau kṣaṇenaiva mahā-balān
rāmasya ca mahat karma mahāṁs trāso ’bhavan mama

tān = those; dṛṣṭvā = seeing; patitān = fallen; bhūmau = on the ground; kṣaṇena eva = within a moment; mahā-balān = greatly powerful [rākṣasas]; rāmasya = Rāma’s; ca = and; mahat = great; karma = accomplishment; mahān = greatly; trāsaḥ abhavat mama = I became frightened.

Seeing those greatly powerful [rākṣasas] fallen on the ground within a moment and Rāma’s great accomplishment, I became greatly frightened.

NOTE. In Bhagavad-gītā 11.36, Arjuna observes that rākṣasas naturally become terrified when the Supreme Personality of Godhead reveals His universal powers of overlordship:

sthāne hṛṣīkeśa tava prakīrtyā
jagat prahṛṣyaty anurajyate ca
rakṣāṁsi bhītāni diśo dravanti
sarve namasyanti ca siddha-saṅghāḥ

“O master of the senses, the world becomes joyful upon hearing Your name, and thus everyone becomes attached to You. Although the perfected beings offer You their respectful homage, the demons are afraid, and they flee here and there. All this is rightly done.”
