Chapter 23: Khara Disregards Evil Omens on the Way
Text 3.23.9
क्षतजार्द्रसवर्णाभा सन्ध्या कालं विना बभौ।
खरस्याभिमुखा नेदुस्तदा घोरमृगाः खगाः॥
kṣatajārdra-savarṇābhā sandhyā kālaṁ vinā babhau
kharasyābhimukhā nedus tadā ghora-mṛgāḥ khagāḥ
kṣataja-ardra-savarṇa-ābhā = with the hue of a cloth wet with blood; khagāḥ = and birds; sandhyā = dusk; kālam vinā = ahead of time; babhau = appeared amidst the clouds; kharasya = Khara; abhimukhāḥ = before; neduḥ tadā = roared; ghora-mṛgāḥ = wild and terrible beasts.
With the hue of a cloth wet with blood, dusk appeared amidst the clouds ahead of time.1 Wild and terrible beasts and birds roared before Khara.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: kṣatajārdra-savarṇābhā kṣatajena raktenārdraṁ saṁsiktaṁ yat paṭādikaṁ tat tulyābhā. kālaṁ vinā sva-kālaṁ vinā sandhyā babhau megheṣv iti śeṣaḥ.
Text 6 stated that jackals howled in broad daylight. This text states that fierce beasts roared before Khara. [Therefore there is no redundancy in the description here.]
