वेष्टितं काञ्चनैः पट्टैर्दैवसैन्यप्रमर्दनम्।
आयसैः शङ्कुभिस्तीक्ष्णैः कीर्णं परवसोक्षितम्॥
वज्राशनिसमस्पर्शं परगोपुरदारणम्।
तं महोरगसङ्काशं प्रगृह्य परिघं रणे।
दूषणोऽभ्यद्रवद्रामं क्रूरकर्मा निशाचरः॥
veṣṭitaṁ kāñcanaiḥ paṭṭair daiva-sainya-pramardanam
āyasaiḥ śaṅkubhis tīkṣṇaiḥ kīrṇaṁ para-vasokṣitam
vajrāśani-sama-sparśaṁ para-gopura-dāraṇam
taṁ mahoraga-saṅkāśaṁ pragṛhya parighaṁ raṇe
dūṣaṇo ’bhyadravad rāmaṁ krūra-karmā niśācaraḥ
veṣṭitam = was covered; kāñcanaiḥ = with golden; paṭṭaiḥ = plates; daiva-sainya-pramardanam = it could smash the army of the devas; āyasaiḥ = iron; śaṅkubhiḥ = nails; tīkṣṇaiḥ = sharp; kīrṇam = it was filled with; para-vasa-ukṣitam = and smeared with the flesh of Dūṣaṇa’s opponents 1; vajra-aśani-sama-sparśam = it felt hard like the vajra gem and the thunderbolt weapon; para-gopura-dāraṇam = it could destroy the city gateways of his enemies; tam = that club; mahā-uraga-saṅkāśam = and resembled a large snake; pragṛhya = took up and; parigham = an iron club; raṇe = in battle; dūṣaṇaḥ = Dūṣaṇa; abhyadravat = rushed; rāmam = towards Rāma; krūra-karmā = whose deeds were evil; niśācaraḥ = the night-ranger.
The night-ranger Dūṣaṇa, whose deeds were evil, took up an iron club and rushed towards Rāma in battle. That club was covered with golden plates. It could smash the army of the devas. It was filled with sharp iron nails and smeared with the flesh of Dūṣaṇa’s opponents. It felt hard like the vajra gem and the thunderbolt weapon. It could destroy the city gateways of his enemies and resembled a large snake.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: parito hanyate’neneti parighaḥ.
The club could kill [people] all around [it]; therefore, it was called a parigha.1
