Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 26: Rāmacandra Destroys Dūṣaṇa and his Followers
Text 3.26.33

चतुर्दश सहस्राणि रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम्।
हतान्येकेन रामेण मानुषेण पदातिना॥

catur-daśa sahasrāṇi rakṣasāṁ bhīma-karmaṇām
hatāny ekena rāmeṇa mānuṣeṇa padātinā

catur-daśa sahasrāṇi = fourteen thousand; rakṣasām = rākṣasas; bhīma-karmaṇām = of terrible deeds; hatāni = were killed; ekena = by a single person; rāmeṇa = Rāma; mānuṣeṇa = who appeared as a mere human; padātinā = foot-soldier without [even] a vehicle.

Fourteen thousand rākṣasas who had performed terrible deeds were killed by a single person—Rāma—who appeared as a mere human foot-soldier.1

Mānuṣeṇa indicates that Śrī Rāma was straightforward [like a human being]. Padātinā indicates that He didn’t [even] have a vehicle.1

This verse is a statement of astonishment.

1 Technical note: mānuṣeṇa mānuṣa-veṣeṇāpi.

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: mānuṣeṇa ṛjunā. padātinā vāhana-rahitena.
