Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 30: Khara Destroyed
Text 3.30.14

दृढं खल्ववलिप्तोऽसि भयेष्वपि च निर्भयः।
वाच्यावाच्यं ततो हि त्वं मृत्युवश्यो न बुध्यसे॥

dṛḍhaṁ khalv avalipto ’si bhayeṣv api ca nirbhayaḥ
vācyāvācyaṁ tato hi tvaṁ mṛtyu-vaśyo na budhyase

dṛḍham = certainly; khalu = indeed; avaliptaḥ = proud; asi = You are; bhayeṣu = in the face of dangers; api = even; ca = and; nirbhayaḥ = are fearless; vācya-avācyam = what should and shouldn’t be spoken; tataḥ hi = therefore; tvam = You; mṛtyu-vaśyaḥ = even in the clutches of death; na budhyase = You don’t understand.

Indeed, You are certainly proud. And therefore You are fearless even in the face of dangers. You don’t understand what should and shouldn’t be spoken even in the clutches of death!

He clarifies and demonstrates this in the next verse.1

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: uktam arthaṁ viśiṣya darśayati kāleti.
