Chapter 31: Rāvaṇa’s Conversation with Akampana and Mārīca
Text 3.31.8
तथा क्रुद्धं दशग्रीवं कृताञ्जलिरकम्पनः।
भयात्सन्दिग्धया वाचा रावणं याचतेऽभयम्॥
tathā kruddhaṁ daśagrīvaṁ kṛtāñjalir akampanaḥ
bhayāt sandigdhayā vācā rāvaṇaṁ yācate ’bhayam
tathā = then; kruddham = the angry; daśagrīvam = ten-headed; kṛta-añjaliḥ = joined his palms in supplication; akampanaḥ = Akampana; bhayāt = due to fear; sandigdhayā = that expressed his doubts; vācā = using words; rāvaṇam = Rāvaṇa; yācate = and begged; abhayam = for [an assurance of] safety.
Then, Akampana joined his palms in supplication and begged the angry, ten-headed Rāvaṇa for [an assurance of] safety using words that expressed his doubts due to fear.1
1 In fear, Akampana doubted if Rāvaṇa could protect him from Rāma’s wrath.
