Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 31: Rāvaṇa’s Conversation with Akampana and Mārīca
Text 3.31.38

कच्चित्सुकुशलं राजँल्लोकानां राक्षसेश्वर।
आशङ्के नाथ जाने त्वं यतस्तूर्णमिहागतः॥

kaccit sukuśalaṁ rājanl lokānāṁ rākṣaseśvara
āśaṅke nātha jāne tvaṁ yatas tūrṇam ihāgataḥ

kaccit sukuśalam = is everything well and good; rājan = O king; lokānām = with your people; rākṣasa-īśvara = O lord of the rākṣasas; āśaṅke = I have my apprehensions; na = not; atha = else; jāne = I am aware [of the details, though]; tvam = you; yataḥ = because why; tūrṇam = in a hurry; iha = here; āgataḥ = would come.

O king, O lord of the rākṣasas, is everything well and good with your people?1 I have my apprehensions because why else would you come here in a hurry? I am not aware of the [the details, though].

Because Rāvaṇa had quickly come to his place, Mārīca considered that something very terrible had taken place. He implied that Rāvaṇa wouldn’t have come [to him so] quickly without having a formidable task at hand.

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: lokānāṁ rākṣasa-lokānām. rākṣaseśvareti samabhivyāhārād ayam artho labhyate.
