Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 31: Rāvaṇa’s Conversation with Akampana and Mārīca
Text 3.31.42

आख्याता केन सीता सा मित्ररूपेण शत्रुणा।
त्वया राक्षसशार्दूल को न नन्दति निन्दितः।
सीतामिहानयस्वेति को ब्रवीति ब्रवीहि मे॥

ākhyātā kena sītā sā mitra-rūpeṇa śatruṇā
tvayā rākṣasa-śārdūla ko na nandati ninditaḥ
sītām ihānayasveti ko bravīti bravīhi me

ākhyātā = has spoken [to you]; kena = which; sītā = about Sītā; mitra-rūpeṇa = in the shape of a friend; śatruṇā = enemy [of yours]; tvayā = by you; rākṣasa-śārdūla = O tiger among rākṣasas; kaḥ = who; na = not; nandati = and [therefore] does rejoice in your opulences; ninditaḥ = has been censured; sītām = Sītā; iha = here; ānayasva iti = bring; kaḥ = who; bravīti = tells [you]; bravīhi = tell; me = me.

Which enemy [of yours] in the shape of a friend has spoken [to you] about Sītā? O tiger among rākṣasas, who has been censured by you and [therefore] does not rejoice in your opulences? Who tells [you], ‘Bring Sītā here’? Tell me!

Mārīca intends to tell Rāvaṇa, “He who told [you] about Sītā is [your] enemy in the guise of a friend. And he who instructed [you] to bring her does not delight in your opulences [because] of having been censured by you [in the past]. Tell me about both of them.”
