Chapter 33: Śūrpaṇakhā Criticizes Rāvaṇa
Text 3.33.14
त्वं तु लुब्धः प्रमत्तश्च पराधीनश्च रावण।
विषये स्वे समुत्पन्नं भयं यो नावबुध्यसे॥
tvaṁ tu lubdhaḥ pramattaś ca parādhīnaś ca rāvaṇa
viṣaye sve samutpannaṁ bhayaṁ yo nāvabudhyase
tvam tu = and you; lubdhaḥ = are greedy; pramattaḥ ca = careless; para-adhīnaḥ = dependent on others; ca = and; rāvaṇa = Rāvaṇa; viṣaye = kingdom; sve = your own; samutpannam = that has come upon; bhayam = the danger; yaḥ = for you; na avabudhyase = don’t understand.
And you are greedy, careless and dependent on others, for you don’t understand the danger that has come upon your own kingdom, Rāvaṇa!
“Greedy” indicates that Rāvaṇa didn’t sufficiently provide for his spies and so on.
