Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 33: Śūrpaṇakhā Criticizes Rāvaṇa
Text 3.33.16

अतिमानिनमग्राह्यमात्मसंभावितं नरम्।
क्रोधिनं व्यसने हन्ति स्वजनोऽपि महीपतिम्॥

atimāninam agrāhyam ātma-sambhāvitaṁ naram
krodhinaṁ vyasane hanti sva-jano ’pi mahī-patim

atimāninam = [if he is] excessively proud; agrāhyam = worthy of rejection by good persons; ātma-sambhāvitam = self-glorifying; naram = a man; krodhinam = and inappropriately angry; vyasane = in crisis; hanti = kill; sva-janaḥ = his own people; api = even; mahī-patim = [or] a king.

Even his own people kill a man [or] a king in crisis [if he is] excessively proud, worthy of rejection by good persons, self-glorifying and inappropriately angry.1

“His own people” refers to his ministers and so on.

1 “Inappropriately angry” indicates that the king is angry at someone who should not be his object of anger. Technical note: krodhinam asthāne krodhavantam.
