Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 34: Rāvaṇa’s Conversation With Śūrpaṇakhā
Text 3.34.13
अमर्षी दुर्जयो जेता विक्रान्तो बुद्धिमान्बली।
रामस्य दक्षिणो बाहुर्नित्यं प्राणो बहिश्चरः॥
amarṣī durjayo jetā vikrānto buddhimān balī
rāmasya dakṣiṇo bāhur nityaṁ prāṇo bahiścaraḥ
amarṣī = He is intolerant; durjayaḥ = invincible; jetā = victorious; vikrāntaḥ = heroic; buddhimān = intelligent; balī = and strong; rāmasya = Rāma’s; dakṣiṇaḥ = right; bāhuḥ = hand; nityam = [He is] always; prāṇaḥ = life-air; bahiścaraḥ = and His external.
He is intolerant, invincible, victorious, heroic, intelligent and strong. [He is] always Rāma’s right hand and His external life-air.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: dakṣiṇo bāhur ity anena sarva-kārya-dhurandharatvam uktam.
“Rāma’s right hand” indicates that Lakṣmaṇa had taken up the responsibility of assisting [Rāma] in all respects.1 “His [external] life air” indicates that Lakṣmaṇa was the abode of [Rāma’s] boundless love. Since it is an example [to illustrate that Lakṣmaṇa] was attached [to Rāma] as stated [in the previous text], there is no redundancy here.
