तां तु विस्तीर्णजघनां पीनश्रोणीपयोधराम्।
भार्यार्थे च तवानेतुमुद्यताहं वराननाम्।
विरूपितास्मि क्रूरेण लक्ष्मणेन महाभुज॥
tāṁ tu vistīrṇa-jaghanāṁ pīna-śroṇī-payodharām
bhāryārthe ca tavānetum udyatāhaṁ varānanām
virūpitāsmi krūreṇa lakṣmaṇena mahā-bhuja
tām tu = her; vistīrṇa-jaghanām = who possesses wide hips; pīna-śroṇī-payodharām = swollen thighs and breasts; bhāryā-arthe = [to you] to make her wife; ca = and; tava = your; ānetum = to bring; udyatā = prepared; aham = I; vara-ānanām = beautiful face; virūpitā asmi = [but] I have been deformed; krūreṇa = by cruel; lakṣmaṇena = Lakṣmaṇa; mahā-bhuja = O mighty armed.
O mighty armed, I prepared to bring her, who possesses wide hips, swollen thighs and breasts and beautiful face, [to you] to make her your wife.1 [But] I have been deformed by cruel Lakṣmaṇa.
1 This is obviously a lie and she spoke this lie to please Rāvaṇa and spur him into action to kill Rāma. This lie has arisen out of her anger which has arisen out of her lust: kāmāt krodho ’bhijāyate. A sin leads to a sinful reaction and, in the absence of sufficient purification, a taste for that sin, which leads to another sinful reaction and so on. Lust towards the Supreme Lord is never acceptable—it is love that is acceptable. Mother Sītā, Queens Rukmiṇī and Satyabhāmā as well as the young gopīs of Vṛndāvana headed by Śrī Rādhārāṇī possess love, not lust, for the Supreme Personality of Godhead. There is ample evidence to this effect in the revealed scriptures. Lakṣmaṇa naturally became intolerant of Śūrpaṇakhā’s lust especially when it crossed its limits—she wanted to hurt Sītā-devī out of jealousy—and so He punished her. Unfortunately, Śūrpaṇakhā didn’t learn her lesson. Followers of Śrī Rāmānujācārya point out that Śūrpaṇakhā wanted to separate Rāma from Sītā to enjoy Him while her brother Rāvaṇa wanted to separate Sītā from Rāma to enjoy her; on the other hand, their brother Vibhīṣaṇa wanted to unite Sītā and Rāma to serve them. Let us learn to follow Vibhīṣaṇa.
